Detecting wildlife crossings to ensure safety of motorists (Ain - France)

The 16 km of the RD884 between Collonges and Saint-Genis-Pouilly are black spots for the Ain Department in terms of collisions with wildlife.
In order to reduce the number of accidents along this 2×2 lane road, the Ain department has carried out improvements in the areas where wildlife moves (ecological corridors), which have been identified as priorities. After the construction of an ecobridge, the Department of Ain installed a LACROIX wildlife detection device.
These developments were carried out within the framework of the Schéma Régional de Cohérence Ecologique (SRCE, now SRADDET), the objective being to preserve the ecological continuum between the Jura and the Alps of regional, national and cross-border interest that the RD884 cuts.
Some key figures
- Between 15 000 and 20 000 vehicles per day
- 600 meters of detection on the Péron sector
- 300 meters of monitored section on the Thoiry sector
- About 6 detections every night
The LACROIX solution to detect wildlife crossing and warn drivers
Entirely autonomous in energy and communication, the device is composed of the following elements
1 detector set equipped with a camera and infrared detector and an infrared torch that activates (by radio signal) a dynamic display panel installed upstream of the monitored area, on either side of the road.
1 data collection platform allowing to visualize the detections.
No collisions in the monitored areas
The Department of Ain recorded 8 collisions (3 deer, 2 wild boar, 3 badgers) during the first 6 months of 2021 on the entire RD884.
No collisions occurred on the sections of road equipped with the Fauna detection system, whereas in 2020, 5 collisions were recorded on these same sections.
A lynx detected
Moreover, in the area of Péron, we had the chance to detect a lynx. It is a first!
And even if the people of the environment service know that the lynx is present, its behavior in front of its need to cross had never been observed until now.
Let’s hope that the devices have facilitated the crossing without any collision! (no collision observed at the time it was detected).
